On today’s episode I have Kelly Devos, author of the YA novel Fat Girl on a Plane. This is the story of Cookie Vaughn, a 17 year old high-school student who wants to be the next big fashion designer, but thinks she needs to lose weight in order to achieve her dream. The book manages to be both funny and entertaining and at the same time takes an incredibly incisive look at body -size, body image and the way our society views plus size women. On the episode today we talk a lot about her new book and the real life incident that happened to her while catching a flight that inspired the book. We talk about why companies don’t design and market clothes for plus size women and if this is starting to change. She tease her next book Day Zero and mentions her unpublished teen detective novel that she hopes no one ever sees. Kelly was a great guest and it was an incredibly insightful and in depth conversation.
